Vermont Bans Fracking

Sorry, but the burden of proof is on he who is fracking things up. And a lack of data does not indicate safety, either.

Before fracking as we know it today was commercially viable, under the “Plowshares” program, nuclear bombs were detonated to stimulate the release of natural gas. They included Project Rio Blanco and Project Rusilon in Colorado, and Project Gasbuggy in New Mexico.

For the most part, this was not a successful venture. Rio Blanco, a test which used three bombs in close proximity, failed entirely. Rusilon and Gasbuggy succeeded — Rusilon especially — but as you probably correctly guessed already, the gas was radioactive and unmarketable.

But, all the plans required careful designs for preventing the release of contamination to a degree no one has to live up to with modern fracking.

Now, pull up Google Earth and look at 39.405278, -107.948528 . This is the where the Rusilon device was detonated in Colorado. Now start zooming out and panning around. You will note a great deal of little patches of concrete and dirt in the area. These are natural gas wells. The DOE is still accountable for making sure no radioactive contamination from Rusilon ever gets out.

So what you see here is someone taking advantage of mysterious, conveniently rich and abundant quantities of natural gas suddenly found in this region in the last 40 years. But none of it’s directly contaminated by the Rusilon test. Either the isotopes have decayed or secondary effects from the blast unrelated to contamination resulted in long-term changes to the region. The water quality in the Rusilon area has been extensively monitored, so at least that was not affected here.

But the point is, I can state things definitely here because the DOE has spent millions watching these sites like a hawk. And even the most minute traces of radioactive contamination can be detected, because it is its own radioactive tracer.

Can anyone say the same about modern fracking? Who’s going to be watching modern fracking sites in 40 years? Who’s making sure the secondary long-term effects upon region geology don’t negatively impact others?

I’m not arguing for detonating nukes for natural gas production, I think it’s a dumb idea, but these tests have shown long-term effects upon area geology caused by the blast effects alone, which while not negative in these three cases, certainly have the potential to be, no matter what force of nature you’re relying on to frack things up for you.

And then there’s the contamination. And you have to use a lot more fracking stuff to stimulate the same amount of natural gas production as a couple kilograms of plutonium. That equates to injecting a lot of fracking crap in the ground. No monitoring, no testing, changes to area geology, no half-life that it will decay in… do you think every fracking site out there is going to sequester things away forever?

(AP) ? The breakout performance at the Cannes Film Festival this year is Aniello Arena’s turn as a Naples fishmonger who becomes obsessed with appearing on a “Big Brother”-style TV show in “Reality.”

But the star will not be walking the red carpet at the Italian movie’s gala premiere Friday. He’ll be where he has been for two decades ? in prison.

Arena is riveting in the film by “Gomorrah” director Matteo Garrone ? lively, likable and lost ? and many viewers were astonished to learn he is a lifer who has worked for a decade with the respected Fortezza prison theater company but has never appeared in a feature film.

“I wanted him to appear in ‘Gomorrah,’ but the judge wouldn’t allow it,” said Garrone, whose bloody crime drama won Cannes’ second prize in 2008. “We received the authorization for him to appear in the film (Reality) but he was not allowed to come here to Cannes.”

Garrone said the absence was “not too bitter a disappointment” for Arena, because the movie’s success means he can continue acting. Movie publicists would not comment on the nature of his crime.

Incarceration ? mental rather than physical ? is a theme of the movie, the only Italian entry among 22 contenders for Cannes’ top prize, the Palme d’Or. Arena plays Luciano, a hustling but cheery family man who becomes obsessed with the notion of television fame.

Garrone said the film depicts reality TV as “a paradise on Earth ? a kind of El Dorado that people want to reach.” Entering the “Big Brother” house becomes an idea that traps Luciano and gradually takes over his life.

The director said the 40-something Arena’s exposure to the outside world after years behind bars helped him capture the essence of a man who is beguiled by a world that is new to him.

“I think you can see that in his eyes and in his look,” said Garrone. “The character had to be portrayed by someone who is quite candid.”

It’s a departure from “Gomorrah,” his blood-soaked portrait of Naples’ ruthless Camorra crime syndicate. Garrone said he spent a long time looking for a “powerful subject” for his follow-up feature before alighting on the idea of a simple tale that would allow him to show another slice of Neapolitan life and “portray with great love a character while denouncing an aspect of society.”

It’s hard not to see the story as a satire on our celebrity-obsessed culture, but Garrone wants it to have the timeless quality of a fable. He compares it to “Pinocchio,” the story of a puppet who yearns to be a real boy. Luciano is a real man who yearns to be a celebrity.

“I don’t think I have ever been a very realistic director,” Garrone said. “I talk about reality and then transfigure it, lend another dimension ? and then it becomes a fable.”

“Reality” is full of heart and humor ? especially from the voluble, Fellini-esque assortment of characters who make up Luciano’s family and neighbors ? but it turns darker as Luciano’s single-minded pursuit of fame leads to a kind of madness.

“Initially our idea was to produce a comedy,” said screenwriter Ugo Chiti. “I think the comedy evolved … and turned into a sort of tragedy.”

NASA astronaut Joe Acaba and Russian cosmonauts Gennady Padalka and Sergei Revin launched aboard a?Soyuz spacecraft?from Kazakhstan’s Baikonur Cosmodrome Monday at 11:01 p.m. EDT.

The Soyuz is slated to dock with the?space station?shortly after midnight EDT (0400 GMT) on Thursday (May 17). Once aboard, the three spaceflyers will bring the orbiting complex back to its full complement of six residents. Their fellow Expedition 31 crewmembers ? NASA’s Don Pettit, Dutchman Andre Kuipers and cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko ? have had the station to themselves since April 27.

The launch was a long time coming for Acaba, Padalka and Revin. They were supposed to lift off on March 29, but their flight was delayed for six weeks after a botched pressure test rendered their original Soyuz capsule unusable and forced a new one into service. [Photos: New Expedition 31 Mission Begins]

A four-month stay?

The three newcomers will live aboard the station for four months, eventually returning to Earth in mid-September, NASA officials said.

The veteran cosmonaut Padalka already has two long-duration stints aboard the space station under his belt, but the experience will be a new one for the other two astronauts aboard the Soyuz. Acaba visited the station for less than two weeks on his lone previous spaceflight, the shuttle Discovery’s STS-119 mission in 2009. And Monday’s launch marked Revin’s first trip to orbit.

Acaba said he’s looking forward to his extended stay aboard the station.

“When you do a shuttle flight, you know, it?s two weeks, you?re jam-packed, and you?re just there and you?re working hard, and I don?t think you get the opportunity to really enjoy living in space,” he said in a pre-flight interview with NASA officials.

“I think living there instead of just working there will be a neat thing, personally, and then professionally just the wide range of things that we do ? I?m really looking forward to that,” Acaba added.

Acaba, Padalka and Revin will all serve as flight engineers under Kononenko, who’s commanding Expedition 31.

Enter the Dragon

While spending four months in orbit would be exciting under any circumstances, Acaba and his five crewmates will participate in something truly historic if all goes according to plan.

The private spaceflight firm SpaceX plans to?launch its Dragon capsule?on an unmanned demonstration mission to the station this Saturday (May 19). SpaceX holds a $1.6 billion NASA contract to make 12 robotic cargo runs to the orbiting lab with Dragon and the company’s Falcon 9 rocket, and Saturday’s liftoff will kick off a test flight to see if the duo is ready to go.

If everything goes well, Dragon will be the first private spaceship ever to berth with the space station, and SpaceX could launch the first of its 12 bona fide supply missions later this year.

Manhunt for groom charged in Ill. bride’s slaying

CHICAGO (AP) ? Police and FBI officials were poring over more than 100 tips as they hunted for a man accused of stabbing his new wife to death and leaving her body in her bathtub, still clad in the silver sequined cocktail dress she wore to celebrate their wedding.

More than 30 law enforcement agencies had joined federal agents in the manhunt for Arnoldo Jimenez, who secretly married Estrella Carrera on Friday night at Chicago City Hall and allegedly killed her just hours later. Police would not say in which states they were looking for him, but that it was “all over the country.”

“We are following every lead no matter where it takes us,” said Capt. Joseph Ford of the Burbank Police Department, outside Chicago. “We will not stop looking, and this will not go away.”

Authorities began looking for Jimenez soon after Carrera’s family reported that she failed to pick up her two children Saturday as she had arranged. The family had been unable to reach Carrera or Jimenez, so they asked police to check on her well-being at her apartment in the suburb of Burbank.

That’s when Carrera’s body was found in the bathtub, still clothed in the dress she also may have worn at her wedding ceremony.

Hours later, Carrera’s family received a haunting phone call from a relative of her new husband, who had been her on-and-off boyfriend.

Jimenez’ sister told them he had called her and tearfully said he had left his bride bleeding after a “bad fight,” Carrera’s sister told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Jimenez was charged with first-degree murder, leaving the bride’s family searching for answers to what befell the 26-year-old mother of two in the hours after she secretly got married.

Most of Carrera’s family disapproved of her relationship with Jimenez, even though he was the father of her 2-year-old son.

Jimenez had hit and bruised Carrera in the past, an older sister, Jazmin Carrera, told the AP. Police also said family members reported incidents of violence while the couple was dating.

Jazmin Carrera described 6-foot, 220-pound Jimenez as “very possessive” and jealous. She said she doesn’t understand why her sister married the 30-year-old Jimenez in what seemed like a rushed ceremony ? or why she married him at all.

“That’s the question everyone’s asking themselves,” Jazmin Carrera said.

She got a text message from her sister Friday, inviting her to join them and their friends at a Mexican restaurant and a nightclub to celebrate the nuptials. She didn’t join the festivities.

“It was just all of a sudden,” Jazmin Carrera said. “She didn’t give us enough notice.”

On Sunday, relatives heard from a sister of Jimenez that he had called that day, Jazmin Carrera told the AP.

“She said that he was crying and he was really nervous,” she said. “He said they had a really bad fight and he had left her bleeding.”

Jimenez hung up on his sister and wouldn’t pick up when she called him back, Carrera said.

The phone call is the first detail to shed light on what evidence investigators may have given a judge to obtain the warrant. Police in Burbank said they are aware of the account and were looking into it.

Police are pleading with Jimenez to turn himself in “for the sake of his family and especially his children,” Ford said. “I am sure they are very concerned for his well-being.”

Ford said Jimenez was previously arrested for domestic violence in another city in a case that did not involve Carrera. Police don’t know what Jimenez does for a living, although he was last known to be driving a black 2006 Maserati, an expensive car.

“We do not believe Jimenez is a danger to others, but we certainly do not know his mind frame at the present time,” Ford told the AP.

Since the killing likely took place mere hours after the couple went to Carrera’s apartment, the suspect had a day to flee the metropolitan area or even the state, Ford said.

The victim’s sister said she is taking things “a day at a time.”

“The emotions are just on and off,” Jazmin Carrera said. “It’s unbelievable one minute, and then it hits you and becomes real.”

(AP) ? The man once considered China’s most-wanted fugitive was sentenced to life in prison for smuggling and bribery in a lurid corruption case that reached into the highest echelons of the Communist Party and involved a decade-long extradition fight.

The official Xinhua News Agency reported that Lai Changxing was convicted and sentenced Friday morning by the Intermediate People’s Court in Xiamen, the port city which was his base. On top of the life sentence for smuggling and a concurrent 15-year sentence for bribery, the court ordered all of Lai’s personal property seized, Xinhua said.

The sentencing marked an end for what a decade ago had been one of China’s biggest political scandals. From Xiamen and through his company the Yuanhua Group, Lai ran an extensive smuggling network, using the amassed fortune to cultivate powerful political protectors. Tainted in the scandal were a deputy police minister, who was later given a suspended death sentence, and the one-time provincial party secretary who was politically untouched and became a member of the party’s ruling Politburo.

Lai’s network smuggled everything from cigarettes and cars to oil and textiles. The court’s verdict said the operation totaled $3.3 billion, evaded $1.7 billion in duties and other taxes and bribed 64 officials between 1996 and 1999, Xinhua reported.

The main office of the Xiamen court referred calls to its publicity department where the telephone rang unanswered.

After a broad corruption and anti-smuggling investigation unmasked Lai’s operation, he managed to flee the country, tipped off by local officials, and eventually reached Canada in 1999. He then became the focus of a 12-year extradition battle ? with Chinese leaders often worried that Lai might implicate senior officials in public comments ? until he was deported last year.

In the heyday of his power, Lai lived a life of luxury in China complete with a bulletproof Mercedes Benz. He is alleged to have run a mansion in which he plied officials with liquor and prostitutes.

At one point, state TV splashed pictures of the network’s allegedly ill-gotten gains: a tiger skin rug laid out on a conference table, confiscated cars belonging to corrupt bureaucrats, a sack of gold rings, and a picture of a young woman, said to be a lover kept for one official by Lai.

Scores of officials and executives involved have been imprisoned and at least two executed over the scandal. Aside from the deputy police minister, 10 others, from Xiamen’s deputy mayor to the city’s customs chief were given life sentences or had their death sentences commuted to life.

Also ensnared in the scandal was the wife of Jia Qinglin, the Fujian province party secretary until 1996 and then the party chief of Beijing and an ally of Chinese President Jiang Zemin. Politically connected Chinese said Jiang protected Jia, ordering investigators to curtail the probe.

After Lai fled to Canada, Jiang sent a diplomatic note in 2001 to then Prime Minister Jean Chretien, assuring Canadian authorities Lai would not be executed if returned ? a key Canadian demand.

Still, Lai fought extradition until July when a federal court in Vancouver ruled Lai should not be considered a refugee and upheld his deportation.

Panasonic TC-P55ST50

Panasonic plasma HDTVs have a well-deserved reputation for producing very dark black levels, and the TC-P55ST50 continues that trend. The 55-inch plasma panel not only delivers inky blacks, it’s out of the box color accuracy is outstanding too. ?At $1,699.99 (list) it’s not exactly a steal, but it’s not quite as expensive as our reigning Editors’ Choice plasma, last year’s Samsung PN51D8000 ($2,299.99, 4 stars). The TC-P55ST50 is 3D ready, but it doesn’t include glasses, which means you’ll have to shell out upwards of $300 for active shutter 3D glasses for a family of four. You’ll also pay more to run this set, since like many plasmas, it’s not particularly energy efficient.

Design and Features
With the TC-P55ST50 Panasonic moves away from the glossy black bezel design used on earlier models, including the?Panasonic P50GT30 ($1,199.99, 3.5 stars) we reviewed last year. This time around the panel is framed by dark gray bezels with a slice of clear trim around the outer edge. A silver brushed aluminum base complements the cabinet and gives the set a touch of elegance. The stand does a fine job of supporting the 61-pound cabinet, but it doesn’t swivel.

Behind the right-hand bezel are power, channel, and volume controls and an input select button that doubles as a menu button when you press and hold it. The rear of the cabinet holds all of the I/O connections; three HDMI ports, two USB ports, and an SD card slot are vertically mounted and face left for easy access. Ethernet, TV/antenna, and digital audio out connections sit horizontally under a recessed space notched into the back panel. Here you’ll also find a proprietary mini-component video input port for use with the included component dongle. It’s odd that Panasonic only equips this model with three HDMI ports considering most HDTVs have four, and in the case of the Sharp Elite Pro-60X5FD ($5,999, 4 stars), five.

The 9-inch remote has 43 buttons and a four-way directional rocker with an Enter button. The main keys have red backlighting that makes them easy to identify in a dark room. The three main keys (Menu, Internet, and Viera Tools) are situated above the rocker assembly, while the number keys and player controls are at the bottom of the remote along with a Help key that launches a built-in user manual.

There’s also a 3D button that lets you view 2D content in a simulated 3D mode. As I found with the Sharp Elite Pro-60X5FD, converted 3D picture quality isn’t up to snuff compared with true made-for-3D image quality. You don’t get the depth and clarity that true 3D offers, and there’s a good deal of crosstalk. As with the P50GT30, the P55ST50 does not include active shutter 3D glasses, so be prepared to part with an additional $80 per pair.

Image settings include five preset picture modes (Standard, Cinema, Custom, Vivid, Game) and your basics: Brightness, Contrast, Color, Tint, Sharpness, and Color Temperature. Panasonic’s Pro settings allow you to adjust color space and set high and low white balance for reds, greens, and blues. Other Pro settings include panel brightness and gamma adjustment.

The Audio setting menu offers Bass, Treble, Balance, and Surround settings, as well as a volume leveler to keep those pesky commercials from blasting you out of your seat. The TC-P55ST50′s 8-Train speaker system, consisting of eight mini domes and a slim but powerful subwoofer, provides a solid wall of sound with a good amount of bass, but the surround effect sounds thin.

Panasonic’s selection of Web apps is top notch; streaming movie channels include Vudu, Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant video, and CinemaNow, and you get Facebook, Twitter, Skype, and YouTube. Internet Sports channels include MLB, MLS, NBA, NHL, and Fox Sports. The Viera Market Connect menu offers plenty of free services as well as pay-for apps like Uno, Apple Muncher, and Let’s Golf 2. And, there’s a built-in Web browser.

Performance
I tested the TC-P55ST50 using images from the DisplayMate suite of HDTV diagnostic tests, SpectraCal’s CalMAN software, and a CS-200 Chroma Meter. After a basic calibration the panel produced a nice dark black level reading of 0.02 cd/m2, but it could only manage a peak brightness of 85.45 cd/m2, which is tad darker than the P50GT30 (88.58 cd/m2) and quite dim compared with the Samsung PN51D8000 (244.92 cd/m2).

Out-of-the-box color accuracy was excellent. The panel practically hit the CIE (International Commission On Illumination) chromaticity coordinates for red, green, and blue on the nose, as shown in the CalMAN-generated diagram below. More importantly, the P55ST50 delivers an excellent picture; colors popped from the solid black background in the Seasonal Forests chapter of the BBC’s Planet Earth Blu-ray, and shadow detail was outstanding in the darker Ocean Deep chapter. What’s more, there was no evidence of the fringing effect that plagued the P50GT30. Off angle viewing was typical of a good plasma panel. There was no loss of luminance from an extreme side angle and colors remained bright and true.

3D performance was good, but not on a par with our Editors’ Choice high-end LCD, the Sharp Elite Pro. I noticed some crosstalk while watching clips from IMAX Under The Sea 3D, but the artifacts were minor and didn’t detract from the overall experience. Panasonic’s glasses are lighter than most active shutter glasses, but aren’t as comfortable as today’s passive glasses, like the six pairs that come with the Editors’ Choice Vizio M3D550KD ($1,429.99, 4 stars).

Plasma HDTVs aren’t known for energy efficiency, and the P55ST50 is no exception. With Power Saving mode disabled, the set used 305 watts during my testing; that number dropped to 245 watts with it enabled. The P50GT30 averaged 225 watts, while the Samsung PN51D8000 used 105 watts in Standard mode. If energy efficiency is a deal breaker, consider an LED-backlit LCD model like the LG 55LM6700 ($2,299.99, 4 stars), which only consumed 67 watts.

Conclusion
The Panasonic P55ST50 is a tastefully designed 55-inch plasma HDTV that delivers very accurate colors, deep dark blacks, and wide off-angle viewing. Its $1,700 price tag is not unreasonable considering its performance, but you’ll end up spending around $2000 if you need four pairs of 3D glasses. You don’t get the brightness and superior image quality of the Samsung PN51D8000, but you do get a slightly bigger screen and a much smaller price tag.

Mice Meal Times Influence Weight Gain

Turns out you?re not just what you eat. You?re when you eat. Because a new study in mice suggests that, in the battle of the bulge, the timing of meals influences the piling on of pounds.

In the experiment, researchers gave groups of mice either standard feed or a high-fat diet for 100 days. Some ate at random intervals, day and night. Others were restricted to feeding only during eight-hour windows in every 24-hour period.

Mice on the high-fat but time-restricted diet gained less weight and suffered less liver damage than the mice who ate around the clock. And they had improved nutrient utilization and glucose tolerance, among other markers of metabolic health. Both groups ate the same food in the same amounts, so the only difference was the timing. The study was published in the journal Cell Metabolism. [Megumi Hatori et al., "Time-Restricted Feeding without Reducing Caloric Intake Prevents Metabolic Diseases in Mice Fed a High-Fat Diet"]

The researchers say when mice eat regularly all day and night, it throws off their metabolic cycles. Like if we don?t sleep well, we don?t function as well cognitively during the day. They suggest the same may be true for human metabolism. Which means that when we eat could play a role in controlling obesity.

Apple slips out new OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion beta, leaves 2007 MacBook Pro in a momentary lurch

Mountain Lion Dev Preview

Apple looks to be stepping up the frequency of OS X Mountain Lion beta updates after initially keeping the pace slow and steady: it just posted a new, unceremoniously titled 12A206J build for developers. What the update fixes in the Developer Preview isn’t clear, but there are still glitches with Fast User Switching, Java applets, sharing menus and Notes syncing with iTunes, among a handful of other showstoppers. There’s also a major heads-up for those who own mid-2007 MacBook Pros, as they can’t properly run Mountain Lion at all until another update. We wouldn’t be surprised if there’s another fix in store ahead of WWDC next month, and there’s still all of the summer left for Apple to put the final polish on the OS and make its release target.
